How to Log Expenses by Text: Examples That Actually Work

To log an expense by text, write the amount and a short description in the same message. Add the currency, payment account, or owner when it is relevant. A useful entry is specific enough to reduce follow-up questions without forcing you to fill every field manually.

Start with short, concrete examples

The first two examples include an amount and payment context. With “Lunch in Burger King,” the assistant can ask for the missing amount instead of guessing. After you reply with an amount such as “25 JOD,” the conversation can continue toward a reviewable entry.

Include the details that change the record

• Amount: Include the number and decimal places when they matter.
• Description: Say what the purchase was for or where it happened.
• Currency: Add it for travel or foreign-currency spending.
• Payment context: Mention cash, a known account, or the owner when that distinction matters.

What happens when a detail is missing?

FinAssist does not need every detail in the first message. If you omit the currency, chat entry defaults to your home currency. The app can also use a configured payment account or suggest a category when the message gives enough context.

Some omissions need a question. A message such as “50 dollars” does not say whether the amount is an expense or income, so the assistant can ask you to clarify. This conversational approach is useful when you know the purchase but do not want to navigate a full form.

Always review the proposed entry

A useful rule of thumb

Write the shortest message that contains the amount, the thing you bought, and the context that would be difficult to reconstruct later. Then use the review step to correct the rest.
