The most reliable multi-currency workflow is to preserve two facts: what you actually paid and how that amount looks in your home currency. Recording only a converted total makes later review harder because you lose the currency used by the merchant and the account.

Start with the transaction currency

When you buy lunch in another country, enter the amount in the currency shown on the receipt or account statement. For example, a trip might include:

Lunch 20 EUR
Taxi 18 USD
Hotel 150 GBP

Those entries remain meaningful because each one keeps its original currency. You can then compare them in a home-currency view without pretending that the original purchase was made in your home currency.

Use a home currency as a viewing layer

A home currency is useful for a monthly overview, but it should be treated as a comparison layer rather than a replacement for the source amount. FinAssist supports more than 25 currencies, lets you manage accounts in different currencies, and brings totals back to the home-currency view while preserving the transaction context. See the multi-currency expense tracker feature page for the current workflow.

A simple review routine

  1. Check that the transaction currency matches the receipt, account, or cash you used.
  2. Keep accounts separated when they are held in different currencies.
  3. Use the home-currency total for orientation, not as a substitute for the original amount.
  4. Review converted totals when precision matters because conversion results depend on the information and rates available in the app.

Important: A home-currency total is not a guarantee of a particular exchange rate. For tax, reimbursement, or other high-precision records, compare the converted amount with the source statement and keep the supporting record.

Where low-effort entry helps

If you enter an expense through FinAssist AI chat without specifying a currency, the app defaults to your home currency. That is convenient for ordinary home-currency spending, but add the currency explicitly when you are travelling or using a foreign-currency account. You can review the proposed entry before saving it.

For faster entry, see how to log expenses by text. If the purchase is on paper, learn how receipt scanning works.

Keep travel spending easier to review.
